    Description

    GJ
    Paw
is pleased to offer an antique Chinese Neolithic Li or Tripod Vessel from the Xiajiadian culture of Inner Mongolia.
Tripod vessels were discovered in the elite tombs of the Lower Xiajiadian culture, which flourished in what is to today Inner Mongolia between 2200 B.C. and 1600 B.C.
Xiajiadian culture is divided into the Upper and the Lower periods and was named after the village Xiajiadian near Chifeng in Inner Mongolia, where ruins of the early era of the Bronze Age in north China were first excavated in 1960.
The site has offered important materials for the study of the bronze civilization in north China. Large quantities of relics were unearthed, including stone wares, pottery, bronze wares, jade and bone wares.
    A Li or tripod vessel
has a slender, burnished body that flares out to a wide rim and three hollow legs, each standing on a small ceramic support. They are often referred to as goat udder vessels, because the legs are slightly drawn outward “teats”. These vessels were not wheel-turned, but build up with clay and then scraped and shaped into a highly efficient form. The bulbous body would have held liquid or food to be heated over an open fire. Its large surface area would have ensured that the heat reached all parts of the food inside. This piece measures 7 inches in diameter by 10 inches in height (17.7 cm by 25.4 cm). It is in very good condition, including an "in-culture" repair, tiny chips, rubbing and scratches, together with a little substance build up on the inside.
    The age is indeterminate.
These pieces are highly sought after by collectors and often command very high prices at auction, such as the one that sold at Christie's: Sale 1109, Lot 548, 4/5 September, 2002, New York, Rockefeller Plaza. PR (Price realized) 80.00 (see below). It would make a superb addition to any collection of Chinese historical artifacts.
